Aims:

  1. Facilitating integration and journey towards employment

  2. Considering the impact that food has on the wellbeing of society and the issues associated with food, in turn, taking action to reduce these issues.

Beneficiaries: Our project primarily benefits individuals with refugee status, and as a result of our impact, a secondary beneficiary arises: young people and those affected by food poverty.

Collaborators: ACH and The Active Wellbeing Society

About: Chance for Change is a refugee project that aims to empower the beneficiaries so they can fulfil their ambitions. We have collaborated with refugees to learn more about their culture and cuisines to produce material that aims to reduce the range of issues associated with food in society.

We have managed to create a relationship with many refugee organisations across Birmingham who will be sharing our events and activities with the refugees they work with.

The project has two different facets:

  1. English Support: We will be organising a mentoring scheme with refugees and professionals.

  2. Employment Support: This includes workshops, mock interviews and networking session.

We are also focusing on food poverty in the UK and the carbon footprint, targeting a number of UN Goals, including zero hunger and responsible consumption.

We achieve this via two project streams:

  1. Global recipe book: sourcing global recipes from people of refugee status and international students with a focus on informing young people of the effect of food consumption on the carbon footprint.

  2. Food distribution centres: supporting centres with a focus on adding value the process where possible, such as including a recipe card in each food parcel.

We are also collaborating with our existing project, Change for Change, to maximise the impact of Food for Thought.

Activities: Networking and mentoring with employers. Opportunities to improve networking and English language skills. Cooking workshops and classes.
